What balcony waterproofing on the Gold Coast actually involves

The detail that matters is continuity. The membrane runs up the full inside face of the box, over the lip, and ties into the balcony membrane so there is no junction for water to exploit — with a drainage layer in the base so the soil is not sitting in standing water against the lining. A box waterproofed only to soil height leaks the first time it is overfilled.

Doing a planter box properly

Balcony walls are the same problem stood upright. Where a rendered or block wall meets the balcony floor, the membrane has to turn up as an upstand rather than stop at the junction. The Code singles the planter out: NCC 2025 does not treat a screed or topping as part of the structural substrate on a balcony, except inside a planter box, where it may be used to achieve the 1:80 minimum fall (F1D4).

Can a planter box be waterproofed without emptying it?

No. The membrane has to be applied to a clean, dry, prepared surface across the full inside face, and that means the soil and any existing drainage layer come out first. Anything applied over soil is not a membrane.

Does it need a drain?

It needs somewhere for water to go. A drainage layer over the membrane and an outlet is the usual arrangement — without one, the box holds water permanently against the lining and every weakness gets tested continuously.

My internal wall is staining near the balcony. Is the planter the cause?

It is a strong candidate if there is a planter on the other side of that wall, and it is easy to check before assuming a rising damp or plumbing cause.
